IEEE and SWF announce historic collaboration with the launch of Working Group 2874

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity, has begun direct and formal collaboration with the Spatial Web Foundation.

In a press release dated August 11, 2021, it was announced that

• The official launch of The Spatial Web Protocol, Architecture and Governance Working Group (IEEE P2874 Standard) took place on July 21st, 2021.
• The mission of the Spatial Web Working Group is to further develop specificactions to meet the rigorous requirement to become globally adopted IEEE standards.
• This is the first of a series of meetings that will help to shape the Spatial Web.

The press release makes it clear that this is a unique and historic opportunity to participate in what may be considered a public imperative.The working group is open to individuals that would like to participate in this mission. “We are excited to work together with the IEEE and its members to advance the mission of global standards for the Spatial Web, upon which the next generation of applications will be built,” says Gabriel René, Executive Director of Spatial Web Foundation. “While we are initially focused on the core standards, given the broad applicability of Spatial Web Standards, we anticipate a family of standards, whose working groups can individually address technology-oriented standards — for, AI, autonomous vehicles, IoT and robotics, 5G, augmented and virtual reality — as well as industry-specific standards for government, supply chain, manufacturing, climate, healthcare, and smart cities.”
